What are Stem Cells?
If you follow the news on medical science, you may have read about or heard of "stem cells," which have become a hot topic in the scientific community over the past decade. Several companies now provide services of storing cord blood from newborns or collect stem cells from your baby teeth so that they can be used to cure various diseases in the future. But are these legitimate claims or just another medical hoax? If we are going to answer this question, we must start by learning just what these stem cells are.

Stem cells can be found in any organisms, plants or animals. Typically, normal cells in our body have already been assigned specific functions, such as skin cells, nerve cells and liver cells. Furthermore, these cells can divide only for a limited length of time before they become too old and stop dividing. On the other hand, stem cells have three main properties that set them apart from other cell types. Firstly, stem cells have unlimited capability for cell division, as long as the organism in which they reside is still alive. Secondly, the ultimate end of these cells is not determined, meaning they are not assigned specific functions. Thirdly, they must be able to differentiate into other types of cells when stimulated under the appropriate conditions.

Currently, various laboratories are working on using stem cells to cure diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The idea is to harvest stem cells from a patient, induce cell differentiation to obtain the desired cell types and then transplant these cells back to the same patient to replace the dead or malfunctioning cells that caused the disease. This method would eliminate the transplant rejection, as the immune system will recognize these transplanted cells as one of their own. However, these treatments are still limited to the laboratory setting and have yet to be used in hospitals. Stem cells may someday be the medical marvel that everyone hopes they will be, but, until science catches up with the theory, storing cord blood for stem-cell therapy is to invest in a technology that has yet to develop as fact.
