15 สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษพบบ่อยและควรรู้ไว้!

สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในชีวิตประจำวัน เพื่อนๆจะได้เจอสิ่งเหล่านี้เสมอไม่ว่าจะเป็นการพูดในชีวิตประจำวันหรือการอ่านบทความในหนังสือ สำนวนบางสำนวนไม่สามารถแปลตรงตัวได้ เราจึงควรเรียนรู้และทำความเข้าใจทั้งความหมายและวิธีการใช้สำนวนเหล่านี้ เพื่อที่จะพัฒนาทักษะภาษาอังกฤษให้เหมือนเจ้าของภาษามากขึ้น

1. The best of both worlds หมายถึง ในสถานการณ์หนึ่งที่คุณจะได้ข้อดีทั้งสองเรื่องที่แตกต่างกัน ในเวลาเดียวกัน
ตัวอย่างประโยค: She works in the city and lives in the country, so she gets the best of both worlds.

2. Speak of the devil เป็นคำที่ใช้เวลาที่ผู้พูดกำลังพูดถึงใครคนหนึ่งแล้วคนนั้นก็มาให้เห็นอย่างไม่ได้คาดหวัง
ตัวอย่างประโยค: Did you hear what happened to Anna yesterday - oh, speak of the devil, here she is.

3. Bite the bullet – ยอมที่จะเจอกับสถานการณ์ที่ไม่อยากเจอ หรือยอมทนเจ็บ เพื่อให้เรื่องมันจบ
ตัวอย่างประโยค: Mary has to learn to bite the bullet and face her fears of flying.

4. When pigs fly หมายถึง สิ่งที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ หรือไม่มีวันจะเกิดขึ้น
ตัวอย่างประโยค: “I might wake up early tomorrow to clean my room”. “Yes, you'll do that when pigs fly”

5. Letting someone off the hook หมายถึง ปล่อยให้เป็นอิสระจาก (ความยุ่งยาก, ความรับผิดชอบ, การตัดสินใจ)
ตัวอย่างประโยค: We cannot let the government off the hook for what it has done.

6. Once in a blue moon หมายถึง สิ่งที่ไม่เกิดขึ้นบ่อย
ตัวอย่างประโยค: Once in a blue moon Eric will offer to help with the dishes, but usually he doesn't do any housework at all.

7. Pulling someone’s leg หมายถึง แกล้งคน, พูดเล่นกับคนอื่น
ตัวอย่างประโยค: She said she found $1 million in the park, but I think she was just pulling my leg.

8. Stealing someone’s thunder หมายถึง เอาความดีความชอบจากคนอื่น
ตัวอย่างประโยค: Sam stole my thunder when he said he'd done all the work. It's not true – I did most of it!

9. The last straw หมายถึง ฟางเส้นสุดท้าย ก่อนที่เรื่องราวจะสะบั้นลง
ตัวอย่างประโยค: She has been unhappy with him for a long time but when he crashed her car, it was the last straw.

10. Break a leg หมายถึง ขอให้โชคดี, ขอให้ประสบความสำเร็จ
ตัวอย่างประโยค: Tim's family told him to “break a leg” right before he went up on stage.

11. Call it a day หมายถึง เลิกงานกันเถอะ หรือ เลิกทำอะไรก็ตามที่กำลังทำอยู่กันดีกว่า
ตัวอย่างประโยค: We've been working hard all day, so I guess we should call it a day now.

12. Cut somebody some slack หมายถึง โอนอ่อนผ่อนปรน, ให้โอกาส
ตัวอย่างประโยค: Andrew's late again." "Cut him some slack - his wife just had a baby.

13. Give someone the benefit of the doubt หมายถึง เชื่อบางสิ่งที่บางคนพูด
ตัวอย่างประโยค: She said she was late because her flight was cancelled, and we gave her the benefit of the doubt.

14. Miss the boat หมายถึง สายเกินไป
ตัวอย่างประโยค: He missed the boat when he applied too late to get into college.

15. Under the weather หมายถึง ไม่สบาย
ตัวอย่างประโยค: She has just returned from her vacation, but is feeling under the weather and has a sore throat and running nose.
